The locality is one of the most visited places by tourists and thanks to its small distance from the city, many inhabitants of Košice go to the nature or to cottages and chalets to relax. There are plenty of nice and interesting places that have an engaging history and nature. The surrounding mountains are ideal for nice walks in nature, as well as for more challenging hikes and offer many sporting opportunities both in winter and in summer. The surroundings of the second largest city in Slovakia offer even better opportunities in terms of tourism than the surroundings of the capital of Slovakia. This is mainly due to the mountains and hills that are in its vicinity, or, better said – it is surrounded by them. Interesting places for hiking may be the mountains Volovské Hills and Slanské Hills, where several castle complexes stood in the past.

Zádiel

West of the city of Košice, about 50 km from the Byster Challet, there is a natural glen – Zádielská Tiesňava National Nature Reserve, which is associated to a collocation “the most bizarre glen of Slovakia”. The lime-lined valley is up to 300 meters deep. Passing through the rugged glen will satisfy even the most demanding hikers. Particularly noteworthy are the massive rocky cliffs, vertical walls and rocky reefs, which often astonish the visitors by their bizarre shapes. The dominant rock is the slender rock formation called Cukrová homoľa (“the Sugar Loaf”).

Nature trail Jasovská skala

If you are looking for an unpretentious hike, where you can relax and experience beautiful views, follow the footsteps of the Jasovská skala trail. Located in the outskirts of the Slovak Karst National Park, approximately 40 minutes by car from the Byster Challet. The nature trail is only less than 2 kilometers long and overcomes the vertical drop of only 100 meters, making this nature trail an excellent choice for less skilled hikers and families with children. Jasovská Cave, which is the oldest accessible cave in Slovakia, is located in the easternmost point of the Slovak Karst on the southern edge of the Jasov municipality.

Slovak Paradise

Slovak Paradise is one of the most visited tourist areas in the area of Košice, but also in Slovakia, attracting tourists all year round. It is a suitable place for hiking, as well as cycling, offering unique natural scenery. In the tourist centers of Čingov, Kláštorisko, Podlesok and Dedinky, you can experience various tours and excursions. The village of Hrabušice, which is one of the starting points of many hikes, is located about 100 km from the Byster Chalet.

The picturesque landscape of the Košice Basin, surrounded by various mountain ranges, offers many interesting cycling routes. At present, there are 1,638 kilometers of cycling trails in the Košice region. If you like to enjoy the beauty of the surroundings while riding a bicycle, try the cycling routes around Košice. Beginners, but also the more demanding ones, will be certainly satisfied. Cycling routes to Bankov and Jahodna towards Kojšova hoľa hill, Bukovec or south to the Slanske Hills are the favourite ones for more demanding cyclists.

Alpinka

The area of Alpinka is popular not only among hikers and tourists, but it has always been attractive also for cyclists. Skating is possible as well. There is a 25 km route, which leads to Čermeľ Valley. A 1.5 km nature trail is at your disposal opposite the Children’s Railway exit station.

Hradová

Hradová is another close and very popular location. Besides the remains of the Košice Castle and the magnificent view of Košice and the River Hornád Valley, you will find 4 nature trails there, named Man and Forest, Forest Woods, Animals in the Forest and Follow the Košice Castle Trail. There is also a zoo nearby.

Jahodná

The cycling route to Jahodná is 33 km long. Jahodná is not only a favorite place for skiers, but also for cyclists or bikers. From the Loky Stadium, head towards the amphiteater, the Čičkov Stream, KVP, Myslava, Girbeš, Kamenný hrb until you reach Jahodná and back towards Bankov and Čermeľ leading back to Košice.

Čermeľ Valley

The Čermeľ Valley route is not long, but there is almost 500 meters of superelevation. The route is about 16 kilometers long and if you start from the Loky Stadium, the route will lead you via Čermeľ, Alpinka – turning to Kamenny hrb, Alpinka – turning to Kavecany, Čermeľ Valley – turning to Jahodná, Čermeľ Valley, Biely potok (the White Stream), the bottom of the Čermeľ Valley and the top of the Čermeľ Valley.

The area around Košice is traditionally one of the most visited tourist destinations in Slovakia. Time passes a bit slower and many unknown places of this area are interesting because of the humble pulse of life. If you would like to discover the surrounding area, go hiking in the surrounding mountains. There are Čierna hora (the Black Mountain) and Volovské hills. There are also the Slanské Hills in the east.

From the point of view of tourism, the Slanské Hills are particularly interesting as a place with not many views, but rather untouched nature and deep forests. You will be amazed by the rocks that emerge from the forest as well as several lakes. There has been built a network of marked hiking and biking trails in the Slanské Hills. Slovenské rudohorie (The Slovak Ore Mountains), a mountain range surrounding the Košice Basin on the west, also offers many natural beauties. The Volovské Hills stretching from Košice to Dobšiná are worth mentioning.

There is no need to travel far to go skiing. Discover many ski resorts in Košice and its surroundings, which offer various skiing opportunities. Skiing locations near the metropolis of the East are very popular even among foreigners from the neighbouring countries. As an example, there are very good skiing conditions in Jahodná Ski Resort. Well-groomed slopes, cross-country trails, ski schools and kindergartens, night skiing and ski equipment rentals are at the disposal of all the visitors of the ski resorts in the Košice Region.

Jahodná Ski Resort is located about 15 km from Košice. There are 3 slopes of low and medium difficulty levels with a total length of 1.4 km. There are 6 ski tows in total. The resort also offers the possibility of night skiing and groomed cross-country trails in the total length of 17 kilometers. There is also a ski school at the ski resort. Ski equipment rental and ski service are a matter of course.

The ski resort area is situated on the northern slopes of the Krompašský vrch. There are 9 slopes of various difficulty levels. There are 8 ski tows and one double-seat ropeway. All ski slopes are equipped with snowmaking cannons to improve the reliability of the snow cover. The ski resort has been a venue of the European Skiing Cup for several times. Cross-country skiers will appreciate 11 km of cross-country trails in the area. There are ski facilities available of course, such as ski equipment rental, ski school and ski service.

Alpinka

The Alpinka Golf Resort is situated only 8 kilometres (approx. 15 min. by car) from the Košice city center. Alpinka Golf Course is the second oldest golf course in Slovakia. The history of the course can be divided into two stages. In the first one, it used to be a natural playground, where the first Slovak and Košice golf pioneers gained experience with this fantastic sport. The second stage started in 2006 when investments began. The golf club area is outside the main roads, so there are no problems with heavy traffic. The 9-hole golf course is ideal for beginners, but also the European PGA tour professional enjoyed the training there. The course is built in beautiful surroundings of the Čermeľ Valley. Setting of the golf course in the middle of forests creates beautiful scenery, which makes it unique in Slovakia. It is characterized by narrow “fairways” bordered by the above-mentioned forest and lined along its entire length by the Čermeľ Stream.

Malá Ida

There is a 9-hole, 30-hectar course at the village of Malá Ida, which is located 7 km from Košice. The Malá Ida Golf Resort is surrounded by beautiful natural scenery, characterized by wide fairways, large greens with variable hole layouts, lakes and streams. Visitors can also enjoy moments of relaxation in the club house in the style of a Slovak hut, which will provide visitors and club members with a place to relax and refresh. Red Fox Golf Club regularly prepares a range of activities, including tournaments for people with health disabilities and special tournaments for club members who can improve their golf at the academy under the guidance of the top professional trainers from Slovakia and abroad.
